THE ANCIENT SCIENCE OF VASTUSHASTRA ©®

In Vedic India, Vastushastra was used specifically on dwellings for the construction of houses and temples. These esoteric and exoteric systems use the jyotish (science of light) or Vedic astrology and a very unique method of measurement. According to the Rig Vedas, the life in this planet Earth is composed of five elements: Fire (Agni), Air (Vayu), Earth (Prithvi), Ether (Akash) and Water (Jal). These elements vibrate at different frequencies in the galaxy, in the planet, in humans, in nature and in animals; the connection and interaction within the elements produce a positive or negative reaction according to the human behavior which can also affect nature and animal conditions. This science is still in use today.

In the study of Vastushastra, the elements change positions as the planet moves, and also make different combinations and permutations among them; it is necessary a thoroughly study of the Vedic Astrology.

In general we can observe the use of the words Mayamata or Manasara as an Indian treatise of architecture, but their contents are identical and are designated as a Vastushastra, respectively. After deep analysis using the data for astrological information, the procedure goes into the terrain or a plot where the house or building will be constructed.

Examination of the Soil

It is divided into four classes: ground, buildings, design of appearance, couch or placement.

When the plot is found satisfactory according to the previous individual astrological analysis, a hole of about 18 inches should be dug and be filled with water. After 24 hours the architect with the knowledge of Vastushastra must mark the condition of the water in the hole. If the hole is found dry after this time, the soil is considered bad, but if some water remains in the hole, the plot is suitable for a construction. There are other analysis pertinent to the one mentioned and the soil that should be avoided is the porous soil.

Orientation & Cardinal Points

This is the use of compasses based on the previous calculations. This can be applicable to houses, different buildings, villages, temples, etc. The orientation must be revising the personal, yearly data, etc.

The Ground-Plan

The ground plan is divided in many squares depending on the cardinal points and the esoteric system of deities previously done by the astrological chart. The presiding deity Vastu-purusha, must be placed on the square, facing NE. In the ancient text of the Atharva Veda, the cardinal point NE is mentioned as a very auspicious direction, and looking at a map of India we see that the North Magnetic pole is at the Northeast direction from any place in India. The Vedas were written probably more than 12,000 years ago.

The Offerings

In the Orient it is customary to make offerings to the spirits of nature (nagas, gnomes) to pacify them since we are using their habitat. In Vastushastra the offerings are to the presiding deities of the cardinal points and the environment. The offerings consist of milk (dairy products) honey, grains, flowers, candles and incense. Mantras will be saying accordingly.
